An Organization for Veterans & the Community

MISSION STATEMENT. Our Post is devoted to the mutual helpfulness of our veterans. We are committed to mentoring youth and the sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans, and to support Americanism and mutual helpfulness in our community.

History of the Sullivan American Legion:

Our Post 68 was established on July 4th 1919 by WW I veterans of Moultrie County.  On that 1919 July 4th our Post took the lead to sponsor fireworks and activities to support Americanism in our community.  That dedication has continued every year and our Post is still the lead for this community display of Americanism.  Our main focus is to provide assistance to veterans that are in need, but we also provide a support system and benefits to people in need throughout our community. The financial support for this comes from fund raisers that are sponsored by our Post, which includes family night dinners, weekly bingo, and a variety of club activities. Our Post members also extend these benefits to veterans outside of our community by delivering needed supplies to the area veteran's hospitals. Our Post is at the forefront to lead parades and ceremonies on Memorial Day, Flag Day, the 4th of July, and Veteran's Day.  We also lead the community high school homecoming parade and Christmas parade, as well as perform the flag raising ceremony at home football games.  Our  most important function is to provide the military rites for the family of a fallen veteran.  We provide a flag folding detail, a rifle squad for a 21 gun salute, and a bugler sounding taps for the fallen veteran.  Our purpose as a veteran's organization is to support Americanism in our community.
